Welcome to Bart's Better Foods -- Intro

Making delicious, healthy food should be fun and not a chore. That’s our aim at Bart’s Better Foods on Whidbey Island.

Before I started Bart’s Better Foods, I spent several years working in high-tech within the food industry at a startup called Treatmo.

I helped food businesses across the U.S. build customer awareness, take advantage of new payments technology and navigate social media. As a byproduct of that immersion, I became an expert on food industry trends, innovations and ideas. I soon started tapping into my own food and cooking knowledge to create recipes.

One recipe in particular that I was keen on perfecting was a veggie burger. I spent a career tasting food across the U.S. and was on a mission to find the best plant-based burger. After plenty of eating and research it was time to take a leap into recipe creation.

Before I started Bart’s Better Foods, I was surfing a plant-based foods diet for the primary reasons of my concern for animal welfare, the planet and health. I was not brought up in a family of voracious meat eaters, but dairy and eggs were a big part of home baking when I was very young and shadowing mom and my Greek and Ukrainian grandmothers in the kitchen.

Summer 2018 we got up and running quickly and had an amazing season at the local Bayview Farmers Market that draws visitors from all over the world. Today, we’re moving forward with freezer paper as packaging for our ground ‘meat’.

My family had a garden where we grew vegetables and my grandparents came from families that farmed and raised produce. The creation of beautiful meals that nourished and elevated was a cornerstone of my environment as a child and remains so as an adult.

Fast-forward to 2017.

I started successfully growing kale, chard, pumpkins and squash on Whidbey Island and for the first time in a long time, experienced the flavor of real, farm fresh, organic food — even better in some cases than farmers market vegetables I had eaten raw or cooked with before. At this point, I became eager to share this flavor with others. This is where veggie burger development began in earnest.

It was time to put my own skills to the test to create a plant-based burger that was satisfying, filling and loaded with micro- and macro-nutrients — The Perfect All-In One Meal. The formula took a year to develop.

I’ve always been eager to help others and create things that make a positive impact on living. Food—good food—builds community and relationships. In my childhood home in Seattle, Washington, nightly family dinners and Sunday extended family dinners were the norm and included feasts of fresh food grown right outside the door.

I want to see people enjoy that freshness, flavor, community and healthy feeling that comes from eating good food. The idea for Bart’s Better Foods was to make it easier for busy families and individuals to achieve great home cooking without that worry of ‘What’s in it.” So I started with a cooking essential for many — a protein or meat made entirely of local vegetables and legumes.

Bart’s Better Foods is now a family business on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound — me, mom, dad and my eldest brother. Our all-plant ground ‘meat’ blends aim to make meal time fun, easy and nutritious. We care about quality, sustainability, traceability and flavor and hope you will enjoy our creations!

In this blog, I plan to share plant-based recipes that inspire ideas for your Bart’s Better Foods products in your own home! Let’s create a healthier world together!

Thank you for trying our food!
